the speaker symbol in the bottom left corner has a red box flashing over
it and there are no voice prompts while driving.
the speaker is enabled and if I run a simulation it works fine.

one other thing, can I set it to avoid country lanes cos the dam thing
took me through the wilds of willy today (c;

The flashing speaker symbol indicates you have the voice prompts turned
off.
Go to the command screen (the one with *Navigate to...etc), and select
*next*. On the second or third page is the command to turn the voice
back on.

When you first load up TomTom, tap the screen to pop up the Navigator menu,
which is where you input the route. Third menu item, just under Navigate To
is Turn Sound on. The way you have it, there should be a red cross through
it. Tap that symbol and voice prompting at junctions will be activated.
